Mother: Anne Landgraf King.(b. 1921)
Brother: Joseph Niles King, Jr.(b. 1941)
2. Shortly after, moved to Melbourne, Fl(1950-1954).
I have been told that we lived in "The Pink Apartments". There are pictures of me in a stroller at the town center water fountain.
3. Moved to Warren, Az, near Bisbee(1954).
My father was an Electrical Engineer in the Civil Service. Radio communications was his specialty.
The government was secretly developing communications systems for space travel at Ft. Huachuca, near bisbee, Az.
We lived in Warren, Az, just east of Bisbee. The first Christmas that I remember was there.
I also remember that it snowed that winter. My brother, Joe, and I built a snowman in the front yard.
Some kids came by and knocked it down. I went inside crying to my parents, and, my dad went out and cussed them out for what they did. Then, I felt better.
Our Christmas tree that year was a "Tumble Weed" sprayed with fake snow and decorated with miniature ornaments. And, of course, we put out cookies and milk for Santa Claus.
4. Back to Florida, moved to Eau Gallie(1955-1957).
We lived less than a mile from the Atlantic Ocean on Eau Gallie Blvd. It was a cement block structure with shrubbery in the front of the house and a short palm tree in the middle of the front yard. There were Oleander and Hibiscus plants on the east side of the house. There was a clothes line in the back yard(T shaped poles with 3 or 4 wires connecting the top bars of the T), great for making a tent with Mom's blankets.
To the west of our house was undeveloped land. I remember this because a fire burned up the land to the west of us. That evening, after the fire department had left, I was given the task of watching for hot spot flair ups.
The family in the house behind us had a TV. Their daughter and I would watch The Wonderful World of Disney.
There was a culdesac off the main road that all the neighborhood kids played on. This is where I learned to ride a bike without training wheels.
I remember us driving to Melbourne on the weekends to go shopping. My mother would do the shopping. My Dad & I went to a bar in downtown and the owner would turn on the Saturday morning cartoons on his TV. Later, with Mom, we would get an ice cream cone at a shop near the ocean. The owner of the ice cream shop called me Tommy. There were not many people that called me Tommy.
Some weekend afternoons or evenings we would be at the beach at a bar. I would make sand castles at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean water. Later I would beat a set of Bongos to accompany my Dad who was playing the piano.
I don't remember much about my first grade school except pine needles and rock throwing. The recess yard had pine trees and I remember braiding the three strand pine needles. And rock throwing...Lining up targets against one of the building walls. I went up either to get more ammunition, or to set up the targets again. Anyway, I put myself in the line of fire and was hit in the back of the head with a rock. I guess it bled pretty good because they had Mom come to take me home.
We also went fishing on the causway that crossed the Indian River to the west of where we lived. I would catch Blowfish(that would, as a defensive mechanism, suck in air till they were the size of softballs). Joe stepped on a Stingray once while we were fishing. The tail barb poked the side of his foot.
5. Lived in Marshallville, GA, during the winter of 1957/1958. I remember starting second grade at the school in Marshallville. The schoolhad two grades in each room. First and second, third and forth, fifth and sixth, seventh and eighth. The lunchroom had a 6 cents CocaCola machine.
I liked a girl in my class. her name was Vikki.
The school had a holloween festival in the school gym. The school also had a Christmas play. I was one of the three wise men. It was the 1st time I ever wore tights.
I received my first dog as I was recovering a series of ilnesses.
My brother, Joe, threw an ice pick to try to stick it in a tree and it glanced off the tree and stuck in my ankle.
6. We then moved to Ft. Walton Beach, FL. We lived in a house with water about 50 yards down a hill bordering the back yard. There was a large parcel of undeveloped land next to our home. It made living there a lot of fun. Woods to explore and water to fish and swim in.
7. Moved to La Puente, CA, in the summer of 1962. I remember walking up to a golf course.
